Oral Presentation - “Fried Buzzard Nights” (Revised 1/30/09)

Description. There is much description in "Fried buzzard nights." Why do you think the author uses so much description? What impression does it leave with the reader?
Description is an account of something; esp: an account that presents a picture to a person who reads or hears it.
I believe that the author had a lot of description in the short essay, "Fried Buzzard Nights" in the book The Mee Chronicles: Straight up Stories of a Black Woman's Life by Frankie Lennon because she felt that she needed to remember the times that she enjoyed drinking at Allen's Bar in Evansville, Indiana. Frankie felt that she needed to describe the bar to the readers because that was the time when she just drank for fun, but eventually became an alcoholic. This time in her life either made her or broke her and showed who she was and who she eventually became. Certain descriptions about the bar had me imagine the exact place in Allen's Bar; the cold days, hot days, and the scenery of the bar which was very ugly, broken down, and old. The impression that I get from the short descriptive essay is that Frankie is drinking to save herself, save herself from thinking about the corners and her relationship and attraction for women.

Significance. What is the significance to the author of the short essay, "Fried Buzzard Nights"?
Significance is something signified : MEANING.
I think that the significance of the short essay, "Fried Buzzard Nights" would be that the reader should know what kind of situation that the author is in also the place where Frankie used to spend her time drinking. Frankie, I am assuming was in some kind of depression, trying to find herself; her blackness, and was trying to find away not to break free from opening her mouth that she was a lesbian. Also I think the author is in this situation because people won't accept her and because of her first love Stacey. The big thing is that the author was kind of hinting that she would eventually not drink for fun but because she didn't want to be in reality so later on in other stories the author would become an alcoholic.
