Oral Presentation - "Funny Women"

In the story “Funny Women” by Shay Youngblood the story describes Miss Tom confessing to the narrator about her sexuality and sharing the story of her past love and her present lover, which is Miss Lily.

The narrator learns wisdom of experience from the women in the community. Experience because most of the women have their own story to tell about love either with male or female, all have either had their heart broken by either sexes and have reconciled or meet another love. When the narrator goes fishing with Miss Tom she learns wisdom of experience through a story of Miss Tom’s love life of loving a woman, Juliette and current lover Lily. She learns the important wisdom of experience from Miss Tom and her stories.

The values that seem to be important in this story are to accept yourself and to do things not just for the ones that you love but also for you as a person. I think that the value of accepting yourself is very important because before anyone in society and in your family accepts you, you have to accept who you are. An example would be Miss Tom, she accepts the way she looks, how she acts, and proud of her sexuality. Miss Tom is not embarrassed about who she is and when people do ask her about her sexuality she has no problem answering questions about herself. The value of not just doing things for the ones that you love but also for you because sometimes things don’t turn out the way that you plan. An example would be Miss Tom because she worked very hard and even dressed like a man so she could get paid more, not for her own benefit but for the benefit of Miss Juliette that she loved so much. Miss Tom was going to move Miss Juliette with her but later found out that she was moving to Canada to attend school. I personally got of value of doing things for you yourself and not always for everyone else because again things might not go to plan.

In reading the story I learned the values of the black women in the community which were experience, everyone has gone through something that will help another out, and a sense of family because everyone has a connection with each other either with experience, life challenges, and emotions. Also in reading the story I learned the values about life that everyone has a love in their life that will eventually leave us and/or hurt us.

The story was very interesting to me and I really felt bad for Miss Tom and all the hard work that she had done to try and get Miss Juliette to be with her but everything turned out well for Miss Tom because she found another love Miss Lily.

"Independent Women" - Reader Response #7

The value that I have learned in the story "Independent Women" by Shay Youngblood about the black women in this community is that most women have a mind of their own; they all have their own particular values that they keep themselves such as Aunt Mae. Aunt Mae has her own values of being independent, even if you have a man a women should still have her own money in her pocket so she can pay for her own things. Mae also values the fact that men always make promises and break the promises so that is why she went to a lawyer and wrote all the things down that Willie Pew promised her. Values that I have learned about life are the same values that Aunt Mae has which are being independent, have a mind of your own, and when a man makes a promise make sure you get it in writing. I also have a value that a woman needs to take care of herself before she starts taking care of someone else.
